Five Somoni A Day: Child Labour in Tajikistan
Tajikistan is one of the poorest countries in the world. One in seven men go abroad to find jobs as cheap labourers. Of the country's seven million people, more than sixty percent of the population live below the poverty line. The global recession has played a significant role in making the economic conditions worse. Recent studies show that there are over 200,000 child labourers and the number is only rising because of the tough economic times. This film looks at why there is a need for child labour in Tajikistan and the efforts that UNICEF and the ILO are making with the government to change the country's perceptions about child labour in hopes of eventually reducing and eradicating it.
