Today we are looking at repairing the oval auto dimming interior rear view mirror on the BMW E39 M5 due to it failing and leaking corrosive oil out of it. The process is identical for the E46 M3 as the mirrors are identical and is very quick and easy to do. Symptoms of the mirror unit failing are as follows, but not limited to: 1) Autodim function not working at all 2) Mirror will autodim but will not return to normal within 30 seconds 3) Mirror is patchy from where oil has started to seep out 4) Mirror plastic case has started to go soft and feels sticky at the bottom 5) Damage directly under the mirror unit to the gear lever area and lower dashboard from where oil has already leaked out. If any of the above symptoms are showing (number 5 is the worst case scenario) then remove the mirror from your car IMMEDIATELY and seek to repair it. Do NOT allow the oil from the damaged mirror unit to contact your skin. it is a carsonogenic and also highly corrosive and will cause a severe chemical burn from prolonged exposure. ALWAYS wear protective gloves if the mirror is leaking. If you are in contact with the corrosive oil then wash your hands immediately. if it comes in to contact with your clothes, remove and dispose of them immediately.
