Virtual pfsense - Linux vs. FreeBSD - troubleshooting, spectre, meltdown, issues and quick how to
I've been wanting for years to migrate to pfsense as my home router. Initially, I planned to get a pc engines board, but these are expensive and I'm saving money. In the meantime, I deployed my silent server and decided to prepare it to host a virtual router. A VM will do right? Well... no. My server runs Linux and VirtualBox (I haven't tried VMWare yet) and no matter what I did, the VM would just shut down - no log entries, no alerts, just disappear. Digging the depths of the Internet revealed to me a whole new world of real consequences of mitigating hardware vulnerabilities on software. Spectre, meltdown, grub flags, lots of googling and forums. Thus I migrated to FreeNAS. It's FreeBSD and bhyve should be able to do the job, right? How would it perform?
