GARGOUR - Crafts Stories by MENASA - Emirati Design Platform
GARGOUR STORY SAFARI-BARARI COLLECTION: A LIMITED-EDITION DESIGN COLLECTION INSPIRED BY THE GARGOUR MAKING CRAFT DESIGNED BY CHRIS SCHWAGGA AND SISTERS SHEIKHA AND AFRA BIN DHAHER in COLLABORATION WITH 1971 DESIGN SPACE The Safari-Barari collection is a charming fusion of Emirati and African craft with the flora and fauna of both regions. The Swahili word safari has its origins in the Arabic word safar, meaning to make a journey, while in Arabic, barari means wilderness or desert landscape. Applying the wire used in the making of the traditional Emirati Gargour (wire-crafted fish trap), Rwanda-based artist Chris Schwagga crafted metal sculptures of the Rwandan cow and the Arabian oryx, emblematic animals that simultaneously symbolise beauty and prosperity in the two cultures. These metallic animal forms have been embellished with intricate, vibrant beadwork inspired by the flowers and plants of the UAE, designed by the Emirati design duo Sheikha and Afra Bin Dhaher and crafted by Rwandan artisans skilled in African beadwork. Sheikha and Afra Bin Dhaher took particular inspiration from those plants found commonly around the UAE that look bare from a distance but up close reveal a multitude of tiny blooms, and sought to transpose their essence into motifs that flow and evolve. The final collection consists of 12 sculptures decorated by 12 unique beadwork belts. Safari-Barari presents Rwanda’s African culture through an Emirati lens and likewise Emirati culture through an African lens in a dynamic and contemporary dialogue. The collaboration between the designers was supported by 1971 Design Space in Sharjah, an organization dedicated to displaying and provoking conversations around all forms of contemporary design. https://www.abjaddesign.com/ https://1971design.ae Follow us on: ----------------------- Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/Expo2020Dubai/ Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/expo2020dubai/ Twitter | https://twitter.com/expo2020dubai LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/company/expo-2020-dubai/ Bringing you The World’s Greatest Showcase of Human Brilliance & Achievement.
