Restoration of Tragico Convegno

TRAGICO CONVEGNO (1915, Italy, Celio Film, directed by Ivo Illuminati) FLM67983 Starring Maria Jacobini, Enzo Boccacci, Fulvia Perini, Ivo Illuminati Lucien Danglar unexpectedly receives a letter from a friend in the USA, asking him to take care of his little daughter Maria during her education in Italy. Lucien agrees to do so, without realizing how this decision will affect his life. In 1957, when the Desmet Collection was donated to EYE, the print of TRAGICO CONVEGNO (or MARIA PANSA, HET KLEINE MEISJE in Dutch) was not among the 900 or so films. Only recently did the print reappear, in a private collection that arrived to EYE in 2000. The newly discovered print is in very good condition, but despite being very complete in the beginning, unfortunately it ends at the end of the 2nd reel. In 2011, an international archive search for more material yielded no results. EYE then decided to make use of the resources within the Desmet Collection itself. Within the paper collections, there are 12 photographs, two posters and one publicity flyer in Dutch, announcing the film as a 'tragedy in three parts'. After stating that the film is starring "the sister of Francesca Bertini, the famous Italian diva", each reel is described in detail, quoting some dialog lines directly. Luckily, this description also gives away the ending, which is not mentioned in any other source. In restoring the film EYE decided to preserve the existing parts without any intervention (keeping the Dutch titles and the tinting colors) through analog duplication and Desmet color system. The missing ending is reconstructed with the help of the paper collections. The description of the 3rd reel on the flyer is used as the narrative structure, and 6 of the original photographs are used interchanged with newly made titles. The case of TRAGICO CONVEGNO testifies to the importance of the Desmet Collection as a whole; had the film print and the paper documents not been reunited after more than half a century, it had not been possible to reconstruct the plot. Restoration of TRAGICO CONVEGNO is completed in 2013 by EYE. Restored version has a running time of 34 minutes. With Dutch inter-titles. The world premiere is scheduled for June 29th, 2013 at the Cinema Ritrovato Festival in Bologna, Italy.
