Learning Many of the traditional Greenlandic rolls utilise the efficient body position of a layback recovery. One of the hardest rolls to master is the straight jacket roll which you don't use a paddle or a hand for and instead just use the bouancy in your body and a very efficient way of bringing your body back onto the rear deck of the kayak. If you can get the body technique as efficient as possible then you will need to rely on the blade less. I like to develop both aspects so that you are able to have an efficient blade and body. In rough water, a high recovery where you come into a more forward position will be better so that you are ready for the next wave! Exercise Using your paddling partner to experiment try bringing your body up to toward the back deck. make sure you still use the legs in the same way as before. Try to adjust the body position until you feel like you don't need to use much force on the paddle. This may take a lot of practice to really perfect but the more you can improve your body movement the easier a recovery will be to perform. Move on when... You feel as though you could recover by just using the palm of your hand! or when you are happy that you have the option to allow your body to come up towards the rear deck to make sure your recovery is successful.
