По просьбе Йеннифэр в поисках Цири Геральт направляется в Велен, чтобы посетить корчму под названием «На распутье» и найти живущего где-то в этой местности нильфгаардского шпиона с позывным Гендрик. Однако, прибыв на место, ведьмак понимает, что ему тут не рады: корчмарь вместо ответов на вопросы предлагает ему выйти через чёрный вход, чтобы не попасться на глаза местным, а местные, словно сговорившись, вваливаются в этот момент в корчму и в весьма настойчивой форме сами рады задать чужаку несколько вопросов. В зависимости от ответов ведьмака с задирами или всё решается мирно, или происходит бой. В первом случае ответов их примиряет выпивка, во втором они побоятся ведьмака и оставят его в покое, в любых иных вариантах ответа Геральта произойдёт бой. В зависимости от того, пришлось ли Геральту сражаться, корчмарь или поблагодарит его за то, что он не стал провоцировать резню, или причитает, что тот убил людей некоего барона, за что тот не останется в долгу. В любом случае перепуганный трактирщик станет сотрудничать, сообщив немного информации о Гендрике и — что главное — что тот находится в Вересковке, со стороны которой недавно полыхало зарево.
