Because we're the same person? Fight Club 1999
"Fight Club" is a 1999 American psychological thriller directed by David Fincher, based on the 1996 novel of the same name by Chuck Palahniuk. The film stars Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Helena Bonham Carter. Norton plays the unnamed Narrator, a discontented everyman trapped in a post-industrial consumerist society of "white-collar" workers. He forms an underground organization known as "Fight Club" along with Tyler Durden, a charismatic and cynical anarchist rebel portrayed by Brad Pitt. Palahniuk's novel was optioned by Fox 2000 Pictures producer Laura Ziskin, who hired Jim Uhls to write the film adaptation. Fincher was chosen to direct because of his passion for the story. He developed the script with Uhls and consulted with the cast and other industry professionals during the process. The film was shot in and around Los Angeles from July to December 1998. The director and actors compared the movie to Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and The Graduate (1967), highlighting the conflict between Generation X and the value system of advertising. Studio executives disliked the film and restructured Fincher's marketing campaign to minimize anticipated losses. Fight Club premiered at the 56th Venice International Film Festival on September 10, 1999, and was released in the United States on October 15, 1999, by 20th Century Fox. The film underperformed at the box office and received polarized reviews from critics, becoming one of the most controversial and talked-about movies of the 1990s. However, it later achieved commercial success through its home video release, becoming a cult classic and prompting a critical re-evaluation. On its tenth anniversary in 2009, The New York Times labeled it the "defining cult movie of our time." It is currently ranked among the top 20 films on IMDb and appears in numerous other prestigious rankings. It remains one of the most socially impactful films of the 1990s.
