WHITE OPOSSUM at sunrise - Rare leucistic female Virginia opossum (Didelphis virginiana) 05-21-2015
A rare pregnant leucistic Opossum is shown at the first appearance of daylight in SE Wisconsin. She is foraging among the fruit and bread pieces strewn in the grass. Leucism is a very unusual condition whereby the pigmentation cells in an animal or bird fail to develop properly. This can result in peculiar white patches appearing on the animal, or, more rarely, completely white creatures. Note that her ears, eyes and tail retain their normal pigmentation.
