The Vengence was one of two protype Venator-II Class Star Destroyers employed by the Republic Navy before 9 RB, when the Venator-II went into full production. The other Venator-II was also assigned to the 23rd Formation as the third and final Venator within the formation. The Venator II-class star destroyer is an extensive refit of the venerable Venator-class star destroyer, constructed in the later years of the Galactic Republic as a stopgap for the new Imperial Navy as it transitioned from the Venator to the new Imperial-class, using many prefab components, such as the Kuat superstructure and a modified, smaller, Kuat standardized bridge module. The Venator was a well loved warship of the Republic, used extensively throughout the Clone Wars. However as the Republic began its transition to Empire, it lost favor with the New Order, and while it was used to great effect in the early years of the Empire, it was shortly phased out of service in favor of more robust warships with less of a reliance on fighters, such as the Imperial and the Tector The Venator II was a refit package for aging Venators to aid it remain relevant during their retirement period, especially for fleets too far from the Galactic Core to be reinforced with Imperial-classes in a timely manner. Refit included significant increases to armor, a reinforced flight deck, a larger reactor, improved weaponry, larger, more efficient engines, and a bridge with a standard suite, allowing it to perform all duties needed for a carrier-warship and thus preventing the need for tall twin bridges. Despite these various upgrade, the Venator is still ill-suited for high-intensity front-line combat, and relied heavily on its fighter compliment. However with the Tarkin Doctrine in full force, the starfighters it had access to were of poor quality compared to fighters of the Republic Era, further reducing its value in the eyes of the New Order. The Venators were eventually limited to flight schools or transports, until being phased out completely by the Battle of Yavin; scrapped, or in the hands of private forces, collectors, planetary militias, and criminal organizations.
