On the night of January 18–19 and throughout the following day, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord (Epiphany), one of the most significant feasts in the Orthodox Christian calendar. During the Epiphany vigil, believers take part in the Great Blessing of Water, which many then keep in their homes throughout the year as a sacred object of spiritual protection and renewal. One of the most well-known traditions associated with Epiphany in Russia is the practice of the Epiphany plunge. Each year, thousands of people across the country immerse themselves in icy waters during the night of the feast. Special openings are cut into the ice of rivers and lakes, typically in the shape of a cross. These openings are known as “Iordans”, named after the River Jordan, where, according to the Gospel, Jesus Christ was baptized. Before the immersion begins, a priest blesses the water. Participants then enter the water — traditionally three times — making the sign of the cross and offering a brief prayer. For many, this ritual is an expression of faith, spiritual purification, and inner renewal.
